Gambia's chemical sector is heavily skewed toward supporting its agricultural backbone. The reliance on imported agro raw materials is significant, as the local industry focuses more on formulation than primary synthesis, particularly for crop protection in peanut and rice farming.
The geographic position of Gambia, characterized by a humid tropical climate, increases the prevalence of fungal and insect pests. This creates a constant demand for high-quality pesticides for plants that can withstand high humidity and temperature fluctuations without degrading.
Currently, there is a growing shift toward diversifying into chemical industry raw materials to support small-scale local manufacturing of detergents and basic pharmaceutical intermediates, reducing the vulnerability of the supply chain.
